Anna Douglas Smith was born and raised in Spartanburg, South Carolina. She graduated from Sewanee: The University of the South where she received her Bachelor's Degree in Studio Art and Art History. After migrating to Jackson, WY a year and a half ago, Smith dedicated her artistic practice to analyzing how humans not only live on the terrain but how they live with the terrain and its variety of wildlife. Using painting and drawing, Smith combines images of what is manufactured, simulated, and present within the town of Jackson (cars, highways, street signs, etc.) alongside what is innate, organic, and preserved throughout the whole valley of Jackson Hole. (topography, flora, fauna, etc.)
This visual mixture is an attempt to pinpoint the human footprint in western towns like Jackson. A footprint that includes arguably invasive tourism, booming residential construction, and the objectification and commodification of both the culture and wildlife all for the purpose of financial gain. Smith is currently residing in Jackson, WY studying her environment and producing new work on a day-to-day basis.
