Ned Axthelm: Looming
Oil on Canvas
24 x 36 inches
Ned Axthelm is a painter and dad living in Oakland, California. He was born in Grand Junction, Colorado in 1979. He was raised with a beautiful model of devotion to community and creativity. An annual family reunion to Grand Teton National Park nourished his interest of vastness, the natural world, and connected him to generations of family who live in Wyoming. The strong appeal of urban life drew Ned to Chicago, around the world and eventually to Oakland, California.
His obsession with people- and sharing his dedication to curiosity, observation, and understanding of the world around him- first landed him in a career as a montessori school teacher. After seven years those same impulses shifted to a commitment to community by building with Habitat for Humanity in the Bay Area and eventually evolved to attending art school and becoming an artist and art teacher.
In 2012, Axthelm graduated with his Masters of Fine Art in painting from the Academy of Art University in San Francisco. Ned's focus throughout the degree and to the present lies in the intersection of the visual and social human experience. His paintings explore the private self that is brought into public and expose the unacknowledged power dynamics that exist between strangers. Ned teaches many levels of community art classes at the Richmond Art Center, teaches painting to prisoners at San Quentin Prison, maintains a steady studio practice and is a member of the Oil Painters of America, the Portrait Society of America, California Art Club, and American Impressionist Society.
