Joannie Epstein was originally from Easton, Connecticut and settled in Jackson, Wyoming in 1970 with her husband, Steve. They raised two sons while she taught elementary school in Jackson and Wilson for 42 years. During an art lesson on a journaling trip to France in 1997 with some friends, she asked about painting an old stone building, "How do you make the color gray?" The teacher responded, "Look again, where do you see gray?" She realized that our brains think rocks are gray, but our eyes see the many colors radiating from objects and she has never looked at anything in the same way again. With all the magnificent scenery around this valley, she decided to pursue painting watercolors as a hobby, and she is still inspired by the beauty of this special place that brings her such creative joy.
